Our History and Purpose
HILLCREST CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE, once known as Minnesota Avenue Church, was first organized in 1957, and has ministered effectively to the east side of Anchorage. Hillcrest has been a beacon of light to hundreds of seekers since it began. Likewise, thousands have been reached by faithful giving to World Evangelism.
The harvest field is plentiful, with over 100,000 people living within a 3-mile radius of the church. With God’s help and the sacrifices of committed people, Hillcrest is confident they will more than achieve thier God-given vision for the people of Anchorage.
Hillcrest is PEOPLE … people just like you … united together as a family, encouraging one another to attain our full, God-given potential.
Hillcrest's purpose is to touch the lives of people of all ages and interests with the love God has for them in Jesus Christ. The worship, the ministries, the programs of Hillcrest are all designed to meet the needs of people in our community as they seek to introduce and nurture every individual in a personal, dynamic and life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Hillcrest Church of the Nazarene exists to:
Equip believers to assist those in need, glorify God through worship, love each other, and evangelize the lost.

Our Ministries
Children's Ministry
Here at Hillcrest, the children are a special and active part of the church. We have many activities that encourage them in developing their spiritual life.
Nursery/Toddler Care - Newborn through 2 years is provided. Our staff provides childcare for all regularly scheduled services and most special events.
On Sunday morning we offer Sunday School classes designed to challenge children as they grow spiritually. We also offer a special children’s church service just for them, on their level of understanding. We currently have two age group specific children's church services. Cherub Church for ages 3-5, and Children's Church for ages 6-11.
A Caravan “scouting” program, which encourages spiritual, mental, physical, and social development is offered on Wednesday evenings. A meal for the entirefamily is served as well making it as convenient as possible to attend. The Caravan program runs from September through May and newcomers can be added at any time.
In the summer, special activities as well as summer camping is available.
Music is also a vital part of our children’s program. Children participate in church services by singing special songs and performing special programs throughout the year.
Bible quizzing is offered during the school year on Suday evenings for those who want to memorize scripture and in doing so, compete with other children across Alaska.
Youth Ministry
Refuel Student Ministries exists to invite teens into a personal relationship with Christ, to show God’s love to each other, to glorify God, and to train disciples so that we can help our community through service.
To accomplish this Refuel has a wide variety of ministries.
Sunday School on Sunday mornings which offers Junior High and Senior High, and College Age students a deeper study of the Bible. The Moving Parables, our teen drama troupe meet Sunday evenings.
Power Hour on Wednesday evenings with games, worship, and a relevant lesson.
Monthly activities such as afterglows with fun and games, as well as service projects and special events are available.
Throughout the year many other activities are offered such as skiing, snowboarding, rafting, hiking, and camping trips. Refuel also participates in a number of weekend retreats and week-long camps throughout the year.
Adult Ministry
Three areas of concentration guide our work in adult ministry:
Nurture. We look at how we can help the individual adult grow in spiritual maturity, becoming more like Christ each day of his or her journey. This goal is inward directed.
Fellowship. By “fellowship” we mean much more than simply having a good time with our friends. The fellowship goal points toward the mutual support and encouragement we give and receive in community with fellow believers. This goal is both inward and outward directed.
Outreach. Included in this area are evangelism and ministry, both inside and outside the church. This outreach component is vital to our church as we find ways to put our faith into action, fulfilling the words of the Great Commission. This goal is outward directed.
Women’s Ministry
Is getting to know one another, sharing our lives together, studying and praying together - all for the purpose of becoming God’s women in every aspect of our lives:
Home and family relationships
Daily work
Life attitudes
Personal adequacy
Spiritual growth
Men’s Ministry
Is to help men grow in spiritual maturity, becoming more like Christ each day of their journey, giving men support and encouragement through fellowship with one another, and putting faith into action by outreach inside and outside of the church.
PrimeTimers (Senior Adult Ministry)
Senior adults represent an enormous wealth of resources to our church based on their life experiences, and we value the tremendous contribution they havemade to our church community and individual lives. Our focus is to meet the growing needs of senior adults and to minister to them.
